Balkman traded to Denver

Renaldo Balkman was traded to the Denver Nuggets for Taurean Green, Booby Jones, and a 2010 second round round draft pick. Green and Jones don't have guaranteed contracts next season and will both likely be waived. It's rare to find a quality player in the second round, so basically this trade was a salary dump to help the Knicks get under the cap for 2010. If the Knicks kept Balkman, they would have had to renew his contract after this season. I like Balkman a lot, who specializes in defense and rebounding, but he is a poor shooter and may have struggled to thrive in Mike D'Antoni's offense which relies on long-range shooting. The Knicks also have four other small forwards on the roster, Quentin Richardson, Wilson Chandler, Danilo Gallinari, and Jared Jefferies, who are all better shooters than Renaldo.

Addition of Duhon

The Knicks recently used their mid-level exception to sign former Chicago Bulls free agent point guard to a two-year deal. He is a decent pickup at a position the Knicks need help in. Duhon is a pass-first point guard with a career average of 6.9 points and 4.5 assists per game. There are rumors that he chose New York because he was promised the starting point guard position. He might be ready to run a team now, but I don't see him becoming the Knicks francise point guard of the future. He is a quality back-up but doesn't have the scoring ability to be a starter in the league.

I would have liked to see the Knicks take a chance on Shaun Livingston. He is coming off of a devastating knee injury, but he is still only 22 years old. Because of his injury setbacks, the Knicks could have gotten him for relatively cheap, and now that the team is in the rebuilding process, they have the time to wait and see if he develops. The former lottery pick Livingston looked promising in his first three seasons, especially his third when he averaged 9.3 points and 5.1 assists. Like Duhon, Livingston is a pass-first point guard, but as opposed to the 6'1 Duhon, Livingston is one of the bigger point guards in the league at 6'7, which can be an advantge over the smaller guards. It could also give the Knicks the flexibility to play an undersized shooting guard and have Livingston guard the other team's two-guard.

Duhon has two years to prove me wrong and become a starter in the NBA. If he fails, he will likely not be a part of the Knicks future plans in the summer of 2010 when LeBron and the other prized free agents become available.
