It came as a bit of a surprise when Mike D'Antoni announced he would become the new head coach. He had the opportunity to join the Chicago Bulls and their young core of talented players, but instead chose the dysfunctional Knicks organization. I admire his courage to face the challenge of fixing this team, a team that doesn't have many players that fit his run-and-gun style of play.
With that said, I like the hire of D'Antoni. I think he is one of the premier coaches in the league. Although they may not be a playoff team next year, the Knicks will instantly become more enjoyable to watch playing in D'Antoni's fast-paced offense. I think in two to three years after Mike and Donnie Walsh are able to establish a new system with the right players, the Knicks could be a playoff team.
Mike D'Antoni had some great teams in Phoenix, but they were never able to get over the hump to win a championship. Hopefully in New York he can prove that it is possible to win it all with his system of basketball.
